Essential Business Tax Deadlines for January 2026

As we step into 2026, businesses, employers, farmers, and fishermen should mark their calendars for crucial tax deadlines. Strategic planning can streamline compliance and help avoid penalties.

January 15 - Monthly Tax Deposit for Employers:

If you're responsible for making monthly deposits, ensure your Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax payments are submitted by January 15 for December 2025. Nonpayroll withholding for the same period is also due. Note that electronic deposits are mandatory—paper vouchers are not accepted—unless your total liability is under $2,500 for a return period, in which case quarterly or annual payments coincide with your return.

January 15 - Important Date for Farmers and Fishermen:

To avoid an estimated tax penalty, submit your 2025 estimated payments using Form 1040-ES by January 15. You can file your full return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) by April 15. Missing this date means you must file by March 2, 2026, if not paying by January 15.

Weekend and Legal Holiday Considerations:

Should a deadline fall on a weekend or legal holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day that doesn’t hold a legal holiday status.

Extensions for Disaster Areas:

If your area is designated as a disaster zone, your deadlines may be extended. Stay informed by visiting FEMA’s disaster declarations page or the IRS’s tax relief update page.
